Age 96, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, April 16, 1924, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Galloway) Lycon. He enjoyed a carefree, adventure filled youth while attending Saint Patrick's School during the Depression. In 1943 he enlisted in the Canadian Army and served as a signaller and dispatch rider with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry throughout most of the Northwest European campaign. Still in search of adventure, he served with the Canadian Army Occupation Force until mid-1946. After returning to Halifax he began his long career with Canada Post, starting as a railway mail clerk and retiring as a Regional Director. In retirement he often proclaimed that "he looked forward to going to work everyday and enjoyed the challenges of his job". Retiring in 1985 without a plan, he joyfully navigated every day with his loving wife of 64 years until her passing in 2014. In the years that followed, his days were spent driving around Halifax marvelling at the ever-changing landscape of the city in which he grew up, spending time in Pugwash with his children and grandchildren, and satisfying a lifelong curiosity for topics ranging from climate change to politics. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Lycon, Victoria, B.C.; his sons, John (Sherry) Lycon, Falmouth; and David (Annette) Lycon, Coquitlam, B.C.; and his grandchildren, Nathan and Samantha. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lillian (Goyetche). At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Over the course of his brief illness, John received support from his kind and caring neighbours, ex-work colleagues, Veterans Affairs Canada, and the staff of Home Instead Senior Care. His family wishes to thank them for the kindness and support each provided.
