FORMER TEACHERS, FAMILY GATHER TO HONOR DORIS GOYETCHE
ESSEX
-- As her former co-workers and family members gathered in a circle around
the simple wooden bench placed on the front lawn of Essex Elementary School
on Thursday, both tears and laughter flowed as each shared a memory of the
late teacher Doris Goyetche.
"I want
to say, if Doris were alive, she would be polyurethaning this right now,"
said Doris' sister, Norma Munroe, as she touched the bench. "And God
help the boy who tries to put his initials on this."
Goyetche was
a science teacher in Essex for 32 years before her retirement in 1990. She
died at 74 after a battle with cancer last May and her friends and family
members wanted to place a memorial to her years of service in the place
she loved to teach.
"We wanted something here at the school we could see," said Connie
Perrigo, one of the organizers of the dedication. "There's a plaque
that's coming for the bench. It will say, 'In loving memory of Doris Goyetche,
teacher extraordinaire, 1958 to 1990.'"
Dot Presutti, who came up with the idea for a memorial bench, helped raise
money for dedication.
"I knew
her from Gloucester High School, and that was back in the 1940s," said
Presutti, a close friend of Goyetche's and the school librarian for more
than 14 years. "I think she just meant the world to this school and
to me, and I didn't want her memory to fade."
Presutti said
her fondest memory of her late friend was when her own daughter told Goyetche
what she wanted for her birthday, either a tennis racket or a 10-speed bike.
"She (Goyetche) went home and found a tennis racket and gave it to
her," Presutti said. "And then she told my daughter, 'Go home
and tell your mother you want that bike.' That's just the way Doris did
things."
Retired
second-grade teacher Carolyn Cassidy said when she first began teaching
at the school she was initially afraid of Goyetche, who stood 6-feet but
always insisted she was 5-foot-9.
"She was
kind of an imposing figure, and she was definitely a rule follower,"
she said. Cassidy said she actually had to swallow her gum -- after school
-- because she was so afraid of what Goyetche might do to her if she found
out she was chewing it. She loved sports too, said her nephew David Munroe,
who learned to play basketball from his aunt.
"She had
the fiercest elbows," he said, adding that the timing of the ceremony
could not have been better because it followed the championship winning
season of her beloved Red Sox. "I'll always remember her coming downstairs
and saying, 'The Red Flops did it again,'" he said.

SOLDIERS'
LIFE-SAVING ACTIONS COMMENDED
Two
soldiers received the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation in
2001 for actions they took to save the lives of two Eritrean civilians suffering
from gunshot wounds.
Corporal Daphne Goyetche, a platoon medic, and Master Corporal (then Cpl)
Michael Hawthorn, served with the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment
Battle Group during Task Force East Africa (TFEA).
On February 13, 2001, a group of Eritrean civilians approached the remote
platoon camp at Tsorena, an abandoned village in the midst of the Temporary
Security Zone. Two of the group, a young boy of about fourteen and his father,
had suffered severe gunshot wounds. Both had lost substantial blood and
the wounds were infected. The boy was in danger of losing his life.
Cpl Goyetche recognized the urgency of the situation and began immediate
treatment, calling for a medical evacuation using Canadian and Dutch assets.
Cpl Hawthorn, using his previous training as a paramedic, assisted in the
initial treatment and stabilization of the wounded.
Both soldiers remained with the injured as Cpl Goyetche directed the evacuation
until the ambulance cross-over point where she assisted the Company Medical
Officer, Captain Rob Hiemstra in the resuscitation of the boy. Capt Hiemstra
said the soldiers' actions were instrumental in saving the boy's life and
preventing further injury to the man.
